Gipsy Live: Samba Duo — Brazilian Music in Naples | Gipsy Fashion Wear

Saturday, June 26th, Gipsy Live. For the fourth installment of the Gipsy Fashion Store music series, "Samba Duo," the group composed of Nello Arzanese and Toni Marascia, will be performing. In a mix of guitar and vocals (Nello Arzanese) and percussion (Toni Marascia), the duo will explore Brazilian popular music and the quintessential rhythm of the Carioca urban tradition: Samba. Samba originated in Salvador de Bahia, the port where slaves kidnapped from West Africa were disembarked. The musical traditions of various African ethnic groups, especially Yoruba and Nagô, contributed to its formation; in the original (Bahian) samba, we find blended rhythms from the liturgies of various deities belonging to the religions of different African peoples: jongo, catereté, batuque, baião, and others. The origin of samba is linked to the formation of Candomblé, the Afro-Brazilian syncretic religion that formed in Bahia from the encounter of various ethnic groups who, subjected to forced Christianization, were compelled to conceal their beliefs within the symbols of Catholicism. The musical genre then developed over a century among the lower strata of the population of Rio de Janeiro, in working-class neighborhoods, suburbs, favelas, and on the fringes of Samba Schools, in a melting pot of cultures, roots, experiences, traditions, and different cults, which only in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro have achieved such a profound and varied musical synthesis. A parallel between Rio de Janeiro and Naples, this Saturday "Samba Duo" will bring joy, colors, and rhythms of the Carioca world to the historic center. Watch the event video
