Myth of Bacchus and Amethyst
The name derives from the Greek améthystos("not drunk"). The nymph Amethyst was transformed into crystal by Diana to escape Bacchus; the god of wine tipped his cup onto the stone, dyeing it purple. Hence the belief that it protects against the intoxicating powers of wine.
